Shock & Awe: Does Jesus Wear A Nuclear Halo?

September 11, 2001—Like everyone else I watched the vicious madness play out on my television that dark day. Watched the candy-colored sitcoms and morning talk shows swapped for exploding jetliners and WTC jumpers. Watched someone shove a microphone at an acne-spotted twentysomething with a baseball cap that said ‘PHAT!”, watched the kid stammer, “It’s like it’s not real…like it’s a movie or something…”
Yeah, right buddy—a fall day in Manhattan with a plot straight outta Die Hard. The mantra running through my head in tandem with panic’s savage rhythm: “the fucking Americans are going to lose their fucking minds.”

I recall one of the more intelligent talking heads running it down. He compared Vietnam to the safety on a gun. After that fiasco (a 10,000 day conflict that claimed 50,000 Americans and some 2 million Vietnamese), the public wasn’t gonna just sign off any ol’ war. Wars take money. Wars take material. Wars take lives. And after ‘Nam, the American people were loathe to send their kids into any conflict—and woe-be-tide the Congress or President that did.

The “safety” plagued every administration from Nixon straight through to Clinton. Even Daddy Bush dared not violate the “safety”, instead opting to bring the boys home instead of chancing a quagmire in Iraq in ’91. And it was the “safety” that led directly to the so-called Iran-Contra Affair, a scheme that saw the Reagan Administration plot secret wars waged with secret funds accrued through secret arms and secret cocaine transactions. All this ran outta Oliver North’s basement office at the White House, all this to avoid the “safety”…

But I digress.

Bottom line, following 9-11, the “safety” was off. No more secret wars.
It was time to unleash the madness for real.
And what have we witnessed since…?
The cries for Osama’s head lost to the white noise of Weapons of Mass Destruction and nebulous concepts like “regime-change” and “nation-building”, meaningless buzz words that confuse the sheeple while Canadians lose their lives to trigger-happy rednecks piloting 40 million dollar aircraft. And let’s not forget the ongoing slaughter of Iraqis as Halliburton & Co. bleed their resources.

Meanwhile, on the home front, we have the signing of the Military Commissions Act of 2006…a Draconian document that removes habeas corpus and reduces the United States of America to a police state operating under the illusion of democracy.
Call it fascism in Mickey Mouse ears.

When Mr. Bush signed the Military Commissions Act into being, he used what Keith Olbermann called “eight separate, gruesome, intentional, terroristic invocations of 9-11”. In other words, he used 9-11 to justify the shredding of the American Constitution. But let’s face it, everything that’s happened since 9-11—the war, the systematic suspension of civil liberties, the dumbing down and censorship of the media, the dismantling of social safety nets and implementation of psychotic immigration policies— all have been justified by the calculated horror of that day.
So what was 9-11? Was it what the neo-cons and Jesus freaks at the Project for a New American Century call “a catalyzing event the size of Pearl Harbor”?

Obviously.

But was it perpetrated by the insidious and apparently ever-present Al-Qaeda? Or was it a covert operation engineered by Americans against Americans? An operation designed to change the laws of the United States and remove the “safety”?
You decide.

Barrie Zwicker, maker of The Great Conspiracy—The 9/11 News Special You Never Saw, is from Toronto, Canada where he was, for many years, the host of a national TV show and a media critic.
