Camera Frontera 2: A Festival of Contemporary Photography.

During the month of May works by twenty emerging and established artists will be on exhibit at twelve downtown venues. The exhibits are part of the second staging of camerafrontera: a festival of contemporary photography. The first event took place in 2005 and is modeled on Contact, Toronto’s highly successful photography festival which also runs throughout the month of May.

Exhibiting artists include Michelle La Riviere at the Capitol Centre’s Art in Public Spaces, Susan Dobson, Ron Pitts and Paul Teolis at Discovery North Bay, Matie Glass at Flux Gallery, Marlene Hilton Moore, David Lewis and Ian-Patrick McAllister at Joan Ferneyhough Gallery, John Crawford at KBros Art Shoppe, Tom Grainger at LoGos Books and Art Supplies, Paul Baker at Michelle’s Frame Maker and Gallery, Andy Davies at Monique Smith’s Constituency office Mary Ann Jones and Linda Stoner at Swiss Pastry Chef, Jennifer Johnstone at Vida Salon, Diane Colwell, Kathy Browning and Nick Dubecki and Liz Lott at W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery and Paul Walty at White Water Gallery. Nine of the artists are from the North Bay area, the rest from across Canada from Montreal to Calgary.

The artists were selected by a panel of judges including Ken Stange, Julie Bartkiewicz, Michael De Moreé Daniel Elzinga and Dermot Wilson. The work explores new and traditional domains of photography, with some reflecting on the history of photography.

Kicking the festival off on May 4 will be a gala opening at Flux Gallery from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through Joan Ferneyhough Gallery, White Water Gallery, Flux Gallery, WKP Kennedy Gallery and at the door.

On Saturday, May 5th hourly guided walking tours will begin from the WKP Kennedy Gallery, starting at 11:30 a.m. A number of artist’s talks have been scheduled throughout the month of May. Also on Saturday will be a brunch reception at Joan Ferneyhough Gallery from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a wine and cheese reception at White Water Gallery from 2 – 4 p.m. with artists talks scheduled throughout the day.

Funding for the festival was provided in part by Ontario Trillium Foundation. As an agency of the Ministry of Culture, the foundation receives annually $100 million generated through Ontario’s charity casino initiative. The Foundation allocates grants to eligible charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the arts and culture, environment, human and social services and sports and recreation sectors.

The festival sponsor is Photo Metro, an established North Bay company that has provided state-of-the art photography services to the area for many years.

Daniel Elzinga, Director of White Water Gallery and festival organizer, says, “With community support we can continue to produce a high caliber festival, which we know in time can grow into a great biannual festival”.

The organizing galleries include Joan Ferneyhough Gallery, W. K. P. Kennedy Gallery and White Water Gallery. With generous support from Photo Metro and PM Graphics
