A Phoenix man is being sharply criticized after registering numerous domain names within hours of the Virginia Tech killings. But while his actions are viewed by many as reprehensible, he is one of many Internet opportunists doing the same thing.
Hoping to make a profit he registered domain names such as CampusKillings.com, VirginiaTechMurders.com, SlaughterInVirginia.com and others. Domain names can be purchased for as little as $10 and then auctioned off to the highest bidder.
A representative of GoDaddy.com, the worlds largest domain registration service, said that this practice was becoming increasingly common. Soon after a disaster people start to register domain names pertaining to the event including names of victims.
