Walkom: Tim Hudak’s Rob Ford problem
For Ontario Tory Leader Tim Hudak, Rob Ford is a very mixed blessing.
Yes, Ford won big in last year’s Toronto mayoralty election, with a call for low taxes and spending cuts that clearly resonated with the city’s voters.
And yes, the Ford agenda mirrors that of Hudak, who is also campaigning on a platform of lower taxes and opposition to government waste — a platform carefully designed to appeal to the small-c conservative side of Ontario voters.
Logically, the mood of retrenchment that swept Ford into power in Toronto should work for Hudak as well — not just in this city but throughout the 905 region and other urban areas, where the Tories must make gains if they are to win.
